Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The research project focused on investigating the impact of social media on mental health among young adults. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. The quantitative survey was distributed to a sample of 500 young adults aged 18-25, assessing their social media usage patterns and mental health status. The results indicated a significant association between heavy social media use and higher levels of anxiety and depression symptoms. Moreover, the qualitative interviews provided in-depth insights into the subjective experiences and perceptions of social media's influence on mental well-being. Themes such as social comparison, fear of missing out (FOMO), and cyberbullying emerged as key factors contributing to negative mental health outcomes. Participants expressed feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem when comparing themselves to idealized representations on social media, leading to increased stress and anxiety. The findings also highlighted the role of social support and positive online interactions in mitigating the negative effects of social media on mental health. Participants who reported engaging in meaningful conversations, receiving support from online communities, and limiting exposure to negative content demonstrated better mental well-being. These results emphasize the importance of fostering a supportive online environment and promoting digital literacy skills to enhance young adults' mental health outcomes in the digital age. The study concludes that while social media offers various benefits such as connectivity and information sharing, its excessive use can have detrimental effects on mental health. Therefore, interventions aimed at promoting mindful social media consumption habits and enhancing coping strategies are crucial to safeguarding young adults' well-being. By raising awareness about the potential risks associated with social media and fostering a culture of digital well-being, individuals can navigate online platforms more effectively and maintain positive mental health. Future research should explore longitudinal effects and interventions to further understand and address the complex relationship between social media and mental health.
