Thesis Abstract

Abstract
In this study, we investigate the causes and effects of poor drainage systems on the asphalt pavement layer, with a focus on the Agaro to Bedele road in Ethiopia. Poor drainage is a significant issue that can lead to pavement distress and deterioration. The research aims to identify the specific factors contributing to the poor drainage system along this road and assess the resulting effects on the asphalt pavement layer. Through field surveys, data collection, and analysis, we found that inadequate road slope design, insufficient drainage infrastructure, and lack of maintenance are the primary causes of poor drainage along the Agaro to Bedele road. These factors lead to the accumulation of water on the pavement surface, causing distress such as rutting, cracking, and potholes. Additionally, the presence of water weakens the pavement structure, reducing its load-bearing capacity and overall service life. The effects of poor drainage on the asphalt pavement layer are significant and detrimental. Prolonged exposure to water leads to reduced structural integrity, increased roughness, and decreased skid resistance, posing safety hazards to road users. Moreover, moisture infiltration accelerates the rate of pavement deterioration, necessitating frequent repairs and rehabilitation efforts, which are costly and disruptive to traffic flow. To address these challenges, the study recommends implementing proper drainage design principles, such as adequate road cross slopes, longitudinal gradients, and effective drainage systems including ditches, culverts, and stormwater management practices. Regular maintenance activities such as debris removal, cleaning of drainage structures, and prompt repairs are essential to ensure the longevity and performance of the asphalt pavement layer. Overall, the findings of this study highlight the critical importance of addressing poor drainage systems to preserve the integrity and functionality of asphalt pavements. By understanding the causes and effects of poor drainage, road authorities and engineers can implement proactive measures to mitigate these issues, enhance road safety, and prolong the service life of the pavement infrastructure.
