Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis focuses on the analysis and design of a sustainable stormwater management system for urban areas, aiming to address the challenges posed by increasing urbanization and climate change. Urban areas face significant issues related to stormwater management, including flooding, water pollution, and infrastructure strain. Traditional stormwater management systems often fall short in effectively managing these challenges and fail to meet the demands of sustainable urban development. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop innovative and sustainable stormwater management solutions that can enhance urban resilience and environmental quality. The research methodology employed in this thesis includes a comprehensive literature review, field surveys, data collection, hydrological modeling, and hydraulic analysis. The study area selected for this research is an urban neighborhood characterized by high impervious surfaces and limited green infrastructure. The research investigates the existing stormwater management practices in the area, identifies the key challenges and limitations, and explores opportunities for sustainable interventions. Chapter one provides an introduction to the research topic, background information on urban stormwater management, the problem statement, objectives of the study, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms. Chapter two presents a detailed literature review covering ten key aspects related to sustainable stormwater management, including green infrastructure, low-impact development techniques, urban hydrology, water quality management, and climate change impacts. Chapter three outlines the research methodology, including data collection methods, hydrological modeling techniques, hydraulic analysis tools, field surveys, and stakeholder engagement strategies. The chapter also discusses the selection criteria for stormwater management interventions and the evaluation framework used to assess the sustainability of proposed solutions. Chapter four presents the findings of the research, including the assessment of existing stormwater management practices, the identification of critical issues, and the design of sustainable stormwater management solutions tailored to the study area. The chapter discusses the technical specifications, cost-benefit analysis, and environmental benefits of the proposed interventions. Chapter five concludes the thesis by summarizing the key findings, discussing the implications of the research, and offering recommendations for future studies and practical applications. The thesis contributes to the field of civil engineering by providing insights into sustainable stormwater management practices for urban areas, highlighting the importance of integrating green infrastructure and innovative technologies to enhance urban resilience and environmental sustainability.
