Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Domestic wastewater treatment in Nigeria is a critical issue due to the increased urbanization and population growth in the country. The inadequate management of domestic wastewater poses significant environmental and health risks to the population. This research aims to explore the current status of domestic wastewater treatment in Nigeria, identify the challenges faced, and propose sustainable solutions to address the issue. The study involves a comprehensive review of existing literature on domestic wastewater treatment practices in Nigeria. It examines the regulatory framework, infrastructure, and technologies currently employed for wastewater treatment in the country. The research also analyzes the social, economic, and environmental impacts of inadequate domestic wastewater treatment. The findings reveal that Nigeria faces numerous challenges in domestic wastewater treatment, including insufficient infrastructure, limited technical expertise, and poor regulatory enforcement. As a result, untreated domestic wastewater is often discharged directly into water bodies, leading to water pollution and public health concerns. The research highlights the urgent need for improved domestic wastewater management practices in Nigeria. In proposing solutions, the research emphasizes the importance of investing in modern wastewater treatment technologies and infrastructure. It suggests the adoption of decentralized wastewater treatment systems to cater to the specific needs of different communities. The research also recommends capacity building programs to enhance the technical skills of wastewater treatment professionals in Nigeria. Public awareness campaigns and community engagement initiatives are also proposed to promote responsible wastewater management practices among the population. Overall, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse on domestic wastewater treatment in Nigeria by providing insights into the current challenges and opportunities for improvement. By highlighting the importance of sustainable wastewater management practices, the study aims to support efforts towards achieving a cleaner and healthier environment for all Nigerians.
