Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The production of chemical insecticides using neem oil has gained significant attention due to the growing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly pest control methods. Neem oil, derived from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), contains various compounds such as azadirachtin that exhibit insecticidal properties. The process of producing chemical insecticides from neem oil involves several steps. Firstly, neem seeds are collected and crushed to extract the oil. The extracted neem oil is then processed to isolate the active compound azadirachtin through methods like solvent extraction or chromatography. Once the pure azadirachtin is obtained, it can be formulated into various insecticide products such as sprays, powders, or granules. Formulation involves mixing azadirachtin with other inert ingredients to enhance its stability and efficacy. The final insecticide product is then tested for its effectiveness against target pests and evaluated for safety to non-target organisms and the environment. The production of chemical insecticides using neem oil offers several advantages over conventional synthetic insecticides. Neem-based insecticides are biodegradable, pose minimal risks to humans and beneficial insects, and have shown effectiveness against a wide range of insect pests. Furthermore, neem oil has been reported to have repellent properties, making it a versatile ingredient in integrated pest management strategies. However, challenges in the production of neem-based insecticides include variability in the concentration of active compounds in neem oil due to factors such as geographical location and extraction methods. Additionally, the stability of neem oil formulations under different environmental conditions needs to be considered to ensure consistent insecticidal activity. Future research directions in the production of chemical insecticides using neem oil may focus on optimizing extraction and formulation processes to improve the efficacy and sustainability of neem-based insecticides. Overall, the production of chemical insecticides from neem oil presents a promising avenue for developing eco-friendly pest control solutions with the potential for widespread adoption in agriculture and public health sectors.

Thesis Overview

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Wikipedia “An insecticide is a chemical used against insects. They include homicides and parricides used against the eggs and larvae of insects, respectively. Insecticides are used in agriculture, medicine, industry, and general home use. The use of insecticides is believed to be one of the major factors behind the increase in agricultural productivity in the 20th century.   Nearly all insecticides have the potential to significantly alter ecosystems; many are toxic to humans; and others are concentrated in the food chain.

The classification of insecticides is done in several different ways

  • Systemic insecticides are incorporated by treated plants. Insects ingest the insecticide while feeding on the plants.
  • Contact insecticides are toxic to insects brought into direct contact. Efficacy is often related to the quality of pesticide application, with small droplets (such as aerosols) often improving performance.
  • Natural insecticides, such as nicotine, pyrethrum, and neem extracts are made by plants as defenses against insects. Nicotine-based insecticides are still being widely used in the US and Canada, however they are barred in the EU
  • Plant-incorporated protectants (PIPs) are insecticidal substances produced by plants after genetic modification. For instance, a gene that codes for a specific Baccilus thuringiensis biocidal protein is introduced into a crop plant’s genetic material. Then, the plant manufactures the protein. Since the biocide is incorporated into the plant, additional applications, at least of the same compound, are not required.
  • Inorganic insecticides are manufactured with metals and include arsenates, copper compounds and fluorine compounds, which are now seldom used, and sulfur, which is commonly used.
  • Organic insecticides are synthetic chemicals that comprise the largest numbers of pesticides available for use today.
  • Mode of action—how the pesticide kills or inactivates a pest—is another way of classifying insecticides. Mode of action is important in predicting whether an insecticide will be toxic to unrelated species, such as fish, birds, and mammals.
