Abstract
This thesis explores the implementation of performance management systems in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with the aim of enhancing organizational performance and employee productivity. The study is motivated by the increasing recognition of the importance of performance management in driving business success, particularly in the context of SMEs. The research is guided by the following objectives to investigate the background of performance management systems in SMEs, to identify the challenges faced in implementing performance management systems in SMEs, to examine the impact of performance management systems on organizational performance in SMEs, and to provide recommendations for effective implementation of performance management systems in SMEs. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, defining the problem statement, outlining the objectives, discussing the limitations and scope of the study, highlighting the significance of the research, and detailing the structure of the thesis. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review on performance management systems in SMEs, covering topics such as the definition of performance management, the importance of performance management in SMEs, challenges in implementing performance management systems in SMEs, and best practices for successful implementation. Chapter Three focuses on the research methodology, detailing the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. The chapter also discusses the limitations of the research methodology and provides a justification for the chosen approach. Chapter Four presents the findings of the study, analyzing the impact of performance management systems on organizational performance in SMEs and discussing the challenges faced in implementation. Chapter Five concludes the thesis by summarizing the key findings, discussing the implications of the research, and providing recommendations for SMEs looking to implement effective performance management systems. The study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by offering insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with performance management in SMEs and providing practical recommendations for overcoming implementation barriers.
