Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This study investigates the causes of failures among some managers in business organizations, focusing on a case study of First Bank Nigeria Plc in Enugu. The research aims to identify the factors contributing to managerial failures within the organization and propose potential solutions to mitigate these challenges. The methodology employed in this research includes a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data was collected through interviews, surveys, and analysis of secondary sources such as company reports and existing literature on management failures. The findings reveal several key causes of failures among managers in First Bank Nigeria Plc Enugu, including lack of effective communication, poor decision-making skills, inadequate leadership abilities, and insufficient experience or training. These factors impact the overall performance of managers and subsequently the organization as a whole. The research also highlights the significance of organizational culture and its influence on managerial failures. The culture at First Bank Nigeria Plc Enugu plays a crucial role in shaping the behavior and actions of managers, which can either support or hinder their success. Moreover, external factors such as market competition, economic conditions, and regulatory changes were identified as additional challenges that contribute to managerial failures within the organization. These external influences further emphasize the complex nature of managerial roles and the need for adaptive and resilient leadership. Based on the findings, recommendations are provided to address the identified causes of failures among managers in First Bank Nigeria Plc Enugu. These recommendations include investing in training and development programs for managers, enhancing communication channels within the organization, promoting a supportive and empowering leadership style, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and learning. Ultimately, this research contributes to the existing body of knowledge on managerial failures in business organizations and offers practical insights for improving managerial effectiveness within First Bank Nigeria Plc Enugu and similar institutions. The study underscores the importance of addressing the root causes of failures among managers to enhance organizational performance and sustainability in today's dynamic business environment.

Thesis Overview

1.1     GENERAL BACKGROUND TO THE SUBJECT MATTER

The purpose of this project is nothing short of what organization is all about and possible ways of achieving our goals or objectives.

In this aspect therefore it will be wise for us to know what is an organization. The β€œorganization” is the act of putting into systematic relationship those elements and activities essential to the satisfaction of purpose of organization; this aids the achievement of a given purpose by facilitating and fostering co-operation. Co-ordination and interaction between people, between functions and between department.

          Sometimes we try to ask who is a manager?

Most of us direct our attention to a company or to any organization.

          A Manager from my view could be a man with his family. In another aspect, a manager could be a person who can control those in his company since he has the knowledge of controlling both skilled and unskilled staff to achieve the set goals of the company.

          However, in any organization therefore which concern in this topic that a manager is a person who attempts to achieve certain objectives by directing human activities in production for goods and services. He utilizes the land, factory, office machinery and offer facilities at his disposal in the most effective manner. Denyer d. c (1976) defined management as the act and science of achieving the objectives of a business in most efficient way. The act of carrying out his functions, which goes to make up his job, is described as management.

          Management therefore, is the process of getting things done through people by certain objectives examples, formulation, plans, organizing, directing, staffing, controlling and innovating people. It has been observed that the British government that colonized us merely taught us Arts subject without getting into other aspect of education, what would have been of educational important were neglected such as: Business and Science Education. This have affected our country in general, most of the managers read Arts subjects and they only got to that managerial position by promotion. This then reveals that they lack knowledge or training for the post they hold.

          The second aspect which militate against the progress of managers is that most of them in the position got there as a result of their numerous experience, with this they are deemed fit for this position. There is what I may call β€œJob incompatibility” (conflict) among managers just imagine a situation where the Junior staff who received the managerial skills are made to work with senior staff managers. This will automatically bring conflict to the organization because each and everyone of them will try to make sure that the workers carries out his and only his instruction.

          In conclusion, when a man marries his trouble begins, and when he marries twice his troubles are bigger. In some way as well, for a manager in an organization his problems become complex when he is unaware of the cause of his failure. Our manager should be aware of their loop- holes and make necessary adjustment to avoid failure.

 1.1           PROBLEMS OF THE STUDY

Lack of communication between the workers and co-operation, excessive overtime, errors, lack of staff, poor supervision, poor selection, lack of promotion possibilities, poor salary and poor managerial skill. If all these are not checked, failure on the part of Manager is bound to occur. According to staff of Rohner Aibler in their managers for tomorrow (1967) says managers fail when they are unable to serve the need of their business.

 1.2     THE CAUSES OF FAILURE AMONG SOME MANAGERS

IN BUSINESS ORGANIZATION: - The problem that is concerned with the study is listed below.

  1. Technical Inadequacies.
  2. Problems of geographical spread.
  3. Lack of capital.
  4. Lack of managerial skills.
  5. Existence of rigid organizational structure.
  6. Social and political instability.
  7. Existence of communication gaps between management and workers.
  8. Lack of adequate information with which to plan and control business organization.

According to John W. Humble in his book of improving business results (1972) states that within it are often dissipated on trivial and non-project task.

1.3     THE IMPORTANCE OF STUDYING THE AREA

The importance of this project is to enumerate the causes of failure among some managers in business organization. This is also done to make the managers to beware of their failure, so that they can make possible solutions to the problems. This project is of paramount importance to the managers in business organization for them to easily glance through and know how to handle their organization with maximum effectiveness and efficiency. This project is of vital role to the managers in an organization towards the successful achievement of the objectives.

The study will help the management appoint the right person to the right job.

This study will also help the managers to utilized human and material resources of the objective of the company.
