Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Ocimum gratissimum, commonly known as "Scent leaf," is a plant widely used in traditional medicine for its various health benefits. In this study, we aimed to investigate the phytochemical constituents of the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum. The plant material was collected, dried, and ground to obtain a fine powder, which was then subjected to extraction with methanol. The methanolic extract was then analyzed for its phytochemical constituents using standard qualitative tests. The phytochemical screening of the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, and phenols. Alkaloids are known for their pharmacological activities, including analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Flavonoids possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while tannins have antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Saponins exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, and glycosides have cardioprotective and antioxidant properties. Phenols are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The presence of these phytochemical constituents in the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum suggests its potential therapeutic benefits. Alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides, and phenols are known to exhibit a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory effects. These bioactive compounds make Ocimum gratissimum a promising candidate for further pharmacological investigations. Further studies are warranted to isolate and identify the specific phytochemical compounds present in the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum. Additionally, in vitro and in vivo studies are needed to evaluate the pharmacological activities and potential therapeutic applications of these bioactive compounds. Understanding the phytochemical constituents of Ocimum gratissimum can provide valuable insights into its medicinal properties and help in the development of new therapeutic agents for various health conditions. In conclusion, the methanolic extract of Ocimum gratissimum contains a diverse array of phytochemical constituents with potential pharmacological activities. Further research is needed to elucidate the specific bioactive compounds responsible for these effects and to explore the therapeutic potential of this plant in the treatment of various diseases.
