Abstract
Rabbits are herbivorous animals and their nutrient intake, digestion, and utilization play a crucial role in their overall health and productivity. This study aimed to investigate the nutrient intake, digestion, and utilization by rabbits fed diets based on cowpea hull and soybean hull. A total of 24 rabbits were randomly allocated to three dietary treatment groups Control (C), Cowpea Hull (CH), and Soybean Hull (SH) based diets. The nutrient intake was monitored by measuring the amount of feed consumed and feces excreted. Digestibility was assessed through the analysis of nutrient content in the feed and fecal samples. Metabolic utilization of nutrients was evaluated by measuring the nitrogen balance and digestible energy content. Results indicated that rabbits fed the Cowpea Hull (CH) diet had a significantly higher intake of crude fiber compared to the Control (C) and Soybean Hull (SH) groups. However, the digestibility of crude fiber was lower in the CH group, suggesting potential limitations in fiber utilization. In contrast, rabbits fed the Soybean Hull (SH) diet exhibited higher digestibility of crude fiber, indicating better utilization of this nutrient source. Protein intake was similar across all groups, but nitrogen balance was more positive in the Soybean Hull (SH) group, indicating improved protein retention and utilization. The digestible energy content of the diets was comparable, suggesting that both cowpea hull and soybean hull can serve as energy sources for rabbits. Overall, the study highlights the importance of considering not only the nutrient intake but also the digestibility and utilization of nutrients in rabbit diets. Cowpea hull and soybean hull can be viable sources of nutrients for rabbits, with differences observed in the digestibility of specific nutrients. Further research is needed to optimize the inclusion levels of these ingredients in rabbit diets to achieve the best nutrient utilization and overall performance. In conclusion, the findings suggest that the inclusion of soybean hull in rabbit diets may improve the digestibility and utilization of certain nutrients compared to cowpea hull. Understanding the nutrient intake, digestion, and utilization by rabbits is essential for formulating balanced diets that support their health and productivity.
