Thesis Abstract

Abstract
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has gained popularity in recent years as an effective exercise strategy for improving fitness and performance. This study aimed to investigate the effects of HIIT on muscle adaptations in young adults. The research design involved a structured review of relevant literature, followed by a detailed methodology that included participant recruitment, exercise protocol, and outcome measures. A total of 50 young adults aged 18-30 years participated in the study, which lasted for 12 weeks. The literature review revealed that HIIT is a time-efficient and effective training method that can induce significant improvements in cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, and endurance. However, limited research has focused on the specific muscle adaptations that occur in response to HIIT in young adults. This study sought to address this gap by examining changes in muscle mass, muscle fiber type distribution, and muscle protein synthesis following a HIIT intervention. The research methodology involved a combination of laboratory-based assessments and exercise training sessions. Participants underwent pre- and post-intervention testing, which included measures of muscle size using ultrasound imaging, muscle fiber type distribution using muscle biopsies, and muscle protein synthesis using stable isotope tracers. The exercise protocol consisted of high-intensity cycling intervals performed three times per week for 12 weeks. The results of the study demonstrated significant improvements in muscle size, muscle fiber type distribution, and muscle protein synthesis following the HIIT intervention. Specifically, participants showed increases in muscle cross-sectional area, shifts towards a greater proportion of type II muscle fibers, and enhanced rates of muscle protein synthesis. These findings suggest that HIIT can induce specific muscle adaptations that contribute to improvements in muscle function and performance in young adults. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the effects of HIIT on muscle adaptations in young adults. The findings highlight the potential for HIIT to stimulate muscle growth, enhance muscle fiber composition, and optimize muscle protein turnover. These outcomes have important implications for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and individuals seeking to improve their physical performance through targeted exercise interventions. Further research is warranted to explore the long-term effects of HIIT on muscle adaptations and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms driving these changes.
