Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis explores the impact of exercise on bone density in older adults. As the population continues to age, maintaining bone health becomes increasingly important to prevent osteoporosis and fractures. The study aims to investigate how different types of exercise influence bone density in older adults, with a focus on identifying the most effective exercise modalities for improving bone health. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to examine existing research on the relationship between exercise and bone density in older adults. Various exercise interventions, including weight-bearing, resistance training, and impact exercises, were analyzed to determine their effects on bone mineral density and bone strength. The research methodology involved a longitudinal study design, where a sample of older adults aged 60 and above participated in a structured exercise program for a period of six months. Bone mineral density measurements were taken at baseline and post-intervention using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. Additionally, participants completed bone strength tests to assess the mechanical properties of their bones. Data analysis included statistical tests to compare bone density changes between different exercise groups and control group. The findings of the study revealed significant improvements in bone mineral density among older adults who engaged in regular exercise compared to sedentary individuals. Weight-bearing exercises, such as walking and jogging, were found to be particularly effective in increasing bone density in the hip and spine regions. Resistance training exercises targeting major muscle groups also showed positive effects on bone strength and density. Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of exercise frequency and intensity in promoting bone health in older adults. The implications of this research contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the role of exercise in maintaining bone density and reducing the risk of osteoporosis in older adults. Health professionals and policymakers can use these findings to develop tailored exercise programs that target bone health in aging populations. The study underscores the importance of promoting physical activity as a preventive measure against age-related bone loss and fractures. In conclusion, this thesis provides valuable insights into the impact of exercise on bone density in older adults and offers practical recommendations for promoting bone health through targeted exercise interventions. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies with larger sample sizes to further investigate the long-term effects of exercise on bone health in aging populations. By incorporating regular exercise into daily routines, older adults can improve their bone density and overall quality of life.
