Thesis Abstract

Agricultural purchasing plays a crucial role in the overall success of the agricultural sector. In Imo State, Nigeria, the purchasing processes within the Ministry of Agriculture are essential for supporting farmers and ensuring food security. This study focuses on examining the problems and prospects of agricultural purchasing within the Ministry of Agriculture in Imo State. The research utilizes a case study approach to investigate the agricultural purchasing practices in the Ministry of Agriculture, Imo State. Both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods are employed to gather comprehensive insights into the subject matter. Interviews, surveys, and document analysis are conducted to gather data from various stakeholders involved in agricultural purchasing, including government officials, farmers, suppliers, and consumers. The findings reveal several challenges associated with agricultural purchasing in Imo State. These challenges include inadequate funding for agricultural programs, lack of transparency in procurement processes, delays in payment to suppliers, poor quality control measures, and limited access to markets for farmers. These issues hinder the effectiveness of agricultural purchasing and contribute to inefficiencies within the sector. Despite these challenges, the study also uncovers promising prospects for improving agricultural purchasing in Imo State. These prospects include the adoption of technology to streamline procurement processes, capacity building for procurement officers to enhance their skills and knowledge, increased collaboration between the public and private sectors, and the establishment of farmer cooperatives to strengthen bargaining power. Addressing the problems and capitalizing on the prospects identified in this study can lead to significant improvements in agricultural purchasing practices within the Ministry of Agriculture, Imo State. By enhancing transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness in procurement processes, the Ministry can better support farmers, promote agricultural development, and contribute to food security in the region. In conclusion, this research sheds light on the challenges and opportunities related to agricultural purchasing in Imo State, specifically within the Ministry of Agriculture. By recognizing and addressing the identified problems while leveraging the prospects for improvement, policymakers, stakeholders, and practitioners can work together to enhance agricultural purchasing practices and ultimately contribute to the growth and sustainability of the agricultural sector in Imo State.
