Mulching is an important soil and water conservation practice in agriculture. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different mulching materials on soil moisture conservation in a maize crop. Three mulching treatments - straw mulch, plastic mulch and no mulch (control) were evaluated. Soil moisture content was measured periodically at different depths under the different mulches. Straw mulch was able to retain significantly higher soil moisture compared to control, whereas plastic mulch retained the maximum moisture. The study demonstrated the potential of mulching for improving water use efficiency in crops.
