Abstract
The agricultural sector plays a crucial role in the economic development of many countries worldwide. Agricultural extension services are essential for disseminating information, technologies, and practices to farmers, enabling them to improve productivity and livelihoods. With the advancement in technology, mobile applications have emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing agricultural extension services. This thesis investigates the utilization of mobile applications for enhancing agricultural extension services, focusing on their impact on information dissemination, knowledge sharing, and farmer engagement. The study explores the current state of agricultural extension services, the role of mobile applications in improving access to information, and the challenges and opportunities associated with their adoption. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, outlining the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms. Chapter Two comprises a comprehensive literature review covering ten key themes related to agricultural extension services, mobile applications in agriculture, information and communication technologies (ICTs), farmer empowerment, knowledge sharing, and technology adoption. Chapter Three details the research methodology employed in the study, including research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. It also discusses the theoretical framework guiding the research and the rationale behind the chosen methodologies. Chapter Four presents a detailed discussion of the findings, examining the impact of mobile applications on agricultural extension services, the challenges faced in their implementation, and the factors influencing their effectiveness.
