Abstract
This thesis investigates the utilization of mobile technology to enhance agricultural extension services in rural communities. The study explores the potential of mobile technology in bridging the gap between extension services and farmers, particularly in remote areas where access to conventional extension services is limited. The research aims to assess the impact of mobile technology on agricultural practices, knowledge dissemination, and overall agricultural productivity in rural communities. The study begins with a comprehensive literature review that examines the existing body of knowledge on agricultural extension services, mobile technology applications in agriculture, and the challenges faced by rural communities in accessing extension services. Drawing on theoretical frameworks and empirical studies, the literature review highlights the potential benefits of leveraging mobile technology to deliver timely and relevant agricultural information to farmers. The research methodology section outlines the research design, data collection methods, and analytical techniques employed in the study. The methodology includes a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, such as surveys, interviews, and case studies, to gather data from farmers, extension workers, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural extension services. The findings of the study reveal that the use of mobile technology has a positive impact on improving agricultural extension services in rural communities. Mobile applications, SMS alerts, and voice-based services were found to be effective tools for disseminating agronomic practices, weather forecasts, market information, and pest management strategies to farmers. The study also identifies challenges related to connectivity issues, digital literacy, and sustainability of mobile-based extension services. The discussion of findings section critically analyzes the implications of the research findings and provides recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of mobile technology in agricultural extension services. Strategies for strengthening mobile infrastructure, capacity building for stakeholders, and integrating feedback mechanisms to improve service delivery are discussed. In conclusion, the study underscores the significance of utilizing mobile technology as a viable solution for improving agricultural extension services in rural communities. By leveraging mobile platforms to provide tailored, location-specific information to farmers, extension services can enhance agricultural productivity, empower smallholder farmers, and contribute to sustainable rural development.
