Abstract
Climate change presents a significant challenge to agricultural productivity, particularly for smallholder farmers in Nigeria. This study aims to assess the economic impacts of climate change on agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers in Nigeria. By conducting a case study, this research investigates the specific challenges faced by smallholder farmers in adapting to changing climatic conditions and explores the implications for their livelihoods and economic well-being. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of agricultural data with qualitative interviews to gain a comprehensive understanding of the issue. The research findings reveal that smallholder farmers in Nigeria are experiencing adverse effects of climate change, including erratic rainfall patterns, increased temperatures, and more frequent extreme weather events. These climate-related challenges have led to decreased crop yields, loss of livestock, and reduced farm incomes for smallholder farmers. The study also identifies various adaptation strategies employed by farmers to mitigate the impacts of climate change on their agricultural activities, such as changing crop varieties, adjusting planting dates, and adopting water-saving irrigation techniques. Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of policy interventions and support mechanisms to enhance the resilience of smallholder farmers to climate change and ensure sustainable agricultural productivity in Nigeria. The study recommends the implementation of climate-smart agricultural practices, provision of climate information services, access to financial resources, and capacity-building programs for smallholder farmers to build their adaptive capacity and enhance their livelihoods in the face of climate change. Overall, this research contributes to the existing literature on the economic impacts of climate change on agricultural productivity and provides valuable insights for policymakers, development practitioners, and stakeholders working to support smallholder farmers in Nigeria. By understanding the specific challenges faced by smallholder farmers in the context of climate change, this study aims to inform targeted interventions and strategies that promote sustainable agricultural development and improve the well-being of rural communities in Nigeria.
