Abstract
The research project aimed to investigate the impact of social media usage on mental health among teenagers. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. A sample of 500 teenagers aged between 13 and 18 participated in the research, providing valuable insights into their social media habits and mental well-being. The quantitative analysis revealed a significant correlation between the amount of time spent on social media platforms and symptoms of anxiety and depression among teenagers. Those who reported spending more than three hours per day on social media were more likely to experience feelings of loneliness, comparison, and low self-esteem. These findings suggest a negative association between heavy social media usage and mental health issues in this age group. Furthermore, the qualitative data from interviews highlighted the emotional impact of social media on teenagers. Many participants expressed feelings of inadequacy when comparing themselves to others on social platforms. The pressure to maintain a curated online persona and seek validation through likes and comments was identified as a source of anxiety and stress. Moreover, cyberbullying and online harassment emerged as prevalent concerns, contributing to feelings of isolation and psychological distress. Despite these negative effects, the research also identified potential positive aspects of social media use among teenagers. Platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat were reported to help maintain social connections and provide emotional support during challenging times. Additionally, creative expression through sharing photos, videos, and stories was recognized as a source of empowerment and self-affirmation for some participants. Overall, the findings suggest a complex relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes among teenagers. While excessive use of social platforms appears to be associated with adverse effects on well-being, there are also instances where social media serves as a valuable tool for communication and self-expression. Understanding these nuances is crucial for developing effective interventions and guidelines to promote healthy social media habits and protect the mental health of teenagers in the digital age.
