Abstract
The research project aims to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among young adults. In recent years, the use of social media platforms has become increasingly prevalent, especially among the younger generation. While social media offers numerous benefits such as connecting people, sharing information, and fostering relationships, there is growing concern about its potential negative effects on mental health. The study will focus on young adults aged 18-25 as this demographic is particularly active on social media and is also a critical period for mental health development. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys to gather data on social media usage patterns and mental health indicators, with qualitative interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the perceived impact of social media on mental well-being. Through statistical analysis of survey data and thematic analysis of interview transcripts, the study aims to explore the relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes. Factors such as the amount of time spent on social media, types of platforms used, interactions with online content, and perceived social support will be examined to determine their influence on mental health indicators such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and body image satisfaction. The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing literature on the effects of social media on mental health, providing insights into the specific mechanisms through which social media may impact young adults' well-being. By identifying potential risk factors and protective factors related to social media use, the study aims to inform the development of targeted interventions and educational programs to promote positive mental health outcomes in this population. Overall, this research project seeks to advance our understanding of the complex relationship between social media and mental health among young adults. By investigating both the positive and negative aspects of social media use, the study aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for individuals, mental health professionals, and policymakers to mitigate potential harms and maximize the benefits of social media in promoting mental well-being.
