Abstract
The research project focused on investigating the impact of social media on mental health among young adults. A comprehensive review of existing literature was conducted to explore the various ways in which social media usage can influence mental health outcomes. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods to gather data from a sample of young adults aged 18-25 years. The findings revealed a complex relationship between social media use and mental health. While social media platforms offer opportunities for social connection and support, they also expose users to cyberbullying, negative self-comparisons, and feelings of loneliness and inadequacy. The study found that excessive time spent on social media was associated with higher levels of anxiety, depression, and stress among young adults. Furthermore, the research identified specific factors that could exacerbate the negative impact of social media on mental health, such as the use of certain platforms that promote unrealistic beauty standards or encourage validation-seeking behavior. On the other hand, engaging in positive online interactions, following accounts that promote mental well-being, and setting boundaries for social media use were found to have a protective effect on mental health. The study also highlighted the importance of digital literacy and mental health education in mitigating the adverse effects of social media. Participants who were more aware of the potential risks associated with social media use and had access to resources for coping with online stress reported better mental health outcomes. Overall, the research project contributed valuable insights into the nuanced relationship between social media and mental health among young adults. The findings underscored the need for targeted interventions and policies to promote healthy social media habits and support young adults in maintaining their mental well-being in the digital age. By raising awareness about the potential risks of social media use and fostering a culture of responsible online behavior, stakeholders can work towards creating a safer and more supportive digital environment for young adults.
