Thesis Abstract

ABSTRACT Agricultural Science is an essential subject in secondary schools that plays a crucial role in preparing students for careers in agriculture and related fields. This study focused on the status of Agricultural Science teachers in secondary schools in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The aim of the research was to assess the qualifications, teaching experience, professional development, and challenges faced by Agricultural Science teachers in the state. The research employed a descriptive survey design using a questionnaire as the primary data collection instrument. The population of the study consisted of Agricultural Science teachers in public secondary schools in Kaduna State. A sample of 150 teachers was selected using stratified random sampling technique. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages. The findings revealed that the majority of Agricultural Science teachers in Kaduna State held the minimum qualification required to teach the subject, which is a National Certificate in Education (NCE) in Agricultural Science Education. However, there was a notable lack of teachers with higher qualifications such as Bachelor's or Master's degrees in Agricultural Science. Additionally, the study found that most teachers had a moderate level of teaching experience, with a significant percentage having less than five years of experience. In terms of professional development, the research indicated that a considerable number of Agricultural Science teachers had not participated in any form of training or workshops related to their subject in the past year. This lack of professional development opportunities could hinder their effectiveness in the classroom and limit their capacity to deliver quality agricultural education to students. Furthermore, the study identified several challenges faced by Agricultural Science teachers in Kaduna State, including inadequate teaching resources, lack of support from school management, and insufficient funding for practical activities. These challenges could impact the quality of agricultural education provided to students and hinder the overall development of the agricultural sector in the state. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of addressing the qualifications, teaching experience, professional development, and challenges faced by Agricultural Science teachers in secondary schools in Kaduna State. Recommendations are made for improving teacher qualifications, providing more professional development opportunities, and addressing the challenges faced by teachers to enhance the quality of agricultural education in the state.
