Abstract
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) in Enugu, like many other transport organizations, relies heavily on its accounting information system (AIS) to manage its financial transactions and reporting. This case study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the AIS in the NRC Enugu, focusing on its role in improving financial management, decision-making, and operational efficiency. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining interviews with key personnel, observation of the AIS in operation, and analysis of financial data. The findings reveal that the AIS in the NRC Enugu plays a vital role in streamlining financial processes, enhancing internal controls, and providing timely and accurate financial information to management. The study highlights the importance of proper implementation and maintenance of the AIS to ensure its effectiveness. It also identifies challenges faced by the NRC Enugu in relation to its AIS, such as inadequate training of staff, outdated software, and lack of integration with other systems. Recommendations are provided to address these challenges and improve the overall performance of the AIS. Overall, this research contributes to the existing literature on AIS in the context of transport organizations, particularly in the Nigerian railway sector. The findings offer insights into the benefits and challenges of implementing an AIS in a transport organization, with implications for improving financial management practices and decision-making processes.
