Abstract
Local government finance and accounting in Nigeria face numerous challenges in the contemporary era. This research project aims to delve into the problems and prospects of financial management in Nigerian local governments. The study will explore the various issues that hinder effective financial management at the local government level, such as inadequate revenue sources, mismanagement of funds, lack of transparency, and accountability. Furthermore, the research will investigate how these challenges impact service delivery and development at the grassroots level. By understanding the root causes of financial mismanagement in local governments, this study seeks to provide insights and recommendations to improve financial accountability and transparency in the sector. The prospects of contemporary local government finance and accounting in Nigeria will also be examined in this research project. This will involve analyzing potential solutions and strategies to enhance revenue generation, budgeting processes, and financial reporting in local government authorities. By exploring best practices and lessons from other countries, the study aims to identify opportunities for reform and improvement in the financial management systems of Nigerian local governments. Through a combination of literature review, case studies, and interviews with key stakeholders, this research project will provide a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and prospects of contemporary local government finance and accounting in Nigeria. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on public financial management in Nigeria and offer practical recommendations for policymakers, government officials, and other stakeholders involved in local government finance and accounting. Overall, this research project seeks to shed light on the complexities of financial management in Nigerian local governments and offer valuable insights into how these challenges can be addressed to promote good governance, transparency, and accountability at the grassroots level. By identifying the problems and prospects of contemporary local government finance and accounting in Nigeria, this study aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts to strengthen public financial management systems in the country and improve service delivery to citizens.
