Abstract
Financial accountability is crucial for the effective functioning of the local government system in Nigeria. This research explores strategies to enhance financial accountability within local government administrations. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, including interviews with key stakeholders, analysis of financial reports, and a survey of local government officials. The findings reveal several key strategies for improving financial accountability in the Nigerian local government system. These strategies include implementing robust internal control mechanisms, enhancing transparency in financial processes, and strengthening oversight mechanisms. Additionally, the research highlights the importance of capacity building for local government staff to improve financial management practices. Furthermore, the study underscores the significance of leveraging technology to streamline financial reporting and monitoring processes. By adopting digital tools and platforms, local governments can enhance accountability, reduce the risk of financial mismanagement, and improve overall efficiency in financial operations. Moreover, the research emphasizes the need for greater collaboration between local government authorities, civil society organizations, and the private sector to promote accountability and transparency in financial management. By fostering partnerships and engaging diverse stakeholders, local governments can strengthen their financial governance frameworks and mitigate the risk of corruption and mismanagement. In conclusion, this research provides valuable insights into strategies for enhancing financial accountability in the local government system in Nigeria.
