Abstract
Public sector accountability is a critical aspect of governance in Nigeria. This research project aims to explore the factors contributing to the success and failure of public sector accountability in the country. The study will investigate the institutional frameworks, policies, and mechanisms in place to promote accountability within the public sector. It will also analyze the role of stakeholders such as government agencies, civil society organizations, and the media in ensuring transparency and oversight. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative interviews and case studies. By examining both successful and failed accountability initiatives, the study will identify best practices and lessons learned that can inform future policy and practice in Nigeria. Key factors to be examined include political will, legal frameworks, capacity building, and public participation in accountability processes. The research will also consider the impact of corruption, lack of transparency, and weak enforcement mechanisms on the effectiveness of public sector accountability. The findings of this research will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on public sector accountability in Nigeria and provide valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers. By understanding the drivers of success and failure in accountability efforts, stakeholders can work towards strengthening governance systems and improving service delivery to citizens. Overall, this research project seeks to shed light on the complexities of public sector accountability in Nigeria and offer recommendations for enhancing transparency, integrity, and responsiveness in government operations. By addressing the challenges and leveraging the opportunities for accountability, Nigeria can move towards a more accountable and effective public sector that serves the needs of its citizens. Through a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing public sector accountability, this research aims to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on governance reform in Nigeria and support efforts to build a more accountable and responsive public sector.
