Abstract
Rural banking in Nigeria has been recognized as a key driver of economic development, particularly in rural areas where access to financial services is limited. This study aims to investigate the developmental impact of rural banking in Nigeria. The research will explore the role of rural banks in providing financial services to rural communities, promoting savings mobilization, facilitating access to credit for smallholder farmers and entrepreneurs, and fostering economic growth in these regions. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of financial data from rural banks with qualitative interviews and surveys of rural bank customers and stakeholders. By examining the financial performance of rural banks and the perception of their impact on local development, this research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the contributions of rural banking to the Nigerian economy. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on rural banking in Nigeria and provide insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and development practitioners on how to enhance the effectiveness of rural banking in promoting economic development in rural areas. By identifying the challenges and opportunities faced by rural banks, this research aims to offer recommendations for improving their operations and expanding their outreach to underserved communities. Overall, this study is significant as it addresses a gap in the literature regarding the developmental impact of rural banking in Nigeria. By examining the specific mechanisms through which rural banks contribute to economic development, this research will shed light on the potential of rural banking to alleviate poverty, enhance financial inclusion, and stimulate growth in rural economies. The findings of this study will be valuable for policymakers and practitioners seeking to design policies and programs that leverage the potential of rural banking to drive sustainable development in Nigeria.
