Thesis Abstract
Abstract
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) plays a crucial role in the prevention of bank failures in Nigeria. This study aims to investigate the significance and effectiveness of CBN's regulatory and supervisory functions in ensuring the stability and soundness of the banking sector. The research will examine the various measures and policies implemented by the central bank to prevent bank failures, including capital adequacy requirements, risk management guidelines, and regular bank examinations. By analyzing historical data on bank failures in Nigeria and studying the regulatory framework established by the CBN, this research will provide insights into the impact of central bank interventions on reducing the incidence of bank failures. Additionally, the study will assess the responsiveness of the CBN to emerging risks and challenges facing the banking industry, such as economic downturns, fraud, and inadequate corporate governance practices. Furthermore, the research will explore the role of the CBN in promoting financial stability through early warning systems, crisis management protocols, and collaboration with other regulatory agencies. By examining case studies of successful interventions by the central bank in preventing bank failures, this study will highlight best practices and lessons learned that can guide future regulatory efforts. The findings of this research will contribute to the existing literature on central banking, financial regulation, and bank supervision in developing countries, particularly in the context of Nigeria. The study will provide policymakers, regulators, and banking professionals with valuable insights into the importance of effective regulatory oversight and the key determinants of banking sector stability. In conclusion, the central bank of Nigeria plays a critical role in preventing bank failures by implementing robust regulatory frameworks, conducting regular inspections, and responding proactively to emerging risks. This research will shed light on the significance of the CBN's regulatory functions in safeguarding the integrity and stability of the banking system, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic growth and financial resilience in Nigeria.
